Japan’s taxi system is strictly regulated by the Government of Japan, which helps ensure a safe and reliable service for passengers.
Unlike in some other countries, taxi fares in Japan are generally set according to government regulations, so the pricing is almost the same no matter which taxi you choose.
Taxi fares are calculated automatically by the meter installed in each taxi, based on the distance traveled and the time taken.
A standard Crown-type taxi can carry up to 4 passengers (excluding the driver).
The trunk can usually hold up to 2 large (L-size) suitcases.
Please note that in Japan, children under 12 years old are counted differently for legal passenger limits:
3 children are counted as 2 adults.
For example:
3 adults + 2 children = counted as 4.33 adults, which exceeds the legal passenger limit, so boarding is not permitted.
2 adults + 3 children = permitted.
For groups of 2 adults, one extra piece of luggage may be placed on the front passenger seat, depending on availability.
If your group exceeds the legal limit, please use a wagon-type taxi instead.
Japan’s taxis use a meter system, which means your fare is automatically calculated based on distance and time.
When your trip starts, the first 1.2 km costs:
¥600
This is the minimum fare, even for a short ride.
After the first 1.2 km, an additional charge is added:
+ ¥100 every 231 meters
This means the farther you travel, the more the fare increases.
If your taxi is stuck in traffic or moving very slowly, the meter charges based on time instead of distance:
+ ¥100 every 1 minute 25 seconds
This usually happens during traffic jams or long traffic lights.
A normal 3 km ride with little traffic may cost around ¥1,300–¥1,600.
A longer ride with heavy traffic may cost more because of the time charge.
Good news: Taxi fares in Japan are regulated by the Government of Japan, so prices are generally the same no matter which taxi you choose. Safe, fair, and reliable.
